What is an electronic signature? An electronic signature (a.k.a. e-signing, eSigning, e-signature or eSignature) is simply a signature applied to an electronic document (or transaction or message or any set of data).

Of course, putting ink on data flying through the air between your PC and the closest Wi-Fi access point is not effective, so an electronic signature is any method that shows that someone intended to “sign” a document and that can be confirmed later as an authentic signature on that document.

In practice, an electronic signature can be a click, typed text, sound, picture, fingerprint scan, or literally anything else that could be seen as a sign of intent and a method of showing that this “mark” is authentic, i.e. that it was properly applied to the document at the time of signing and has become a part of the document in a way that can’t be repudiated.
